Portugese is the mother language of both Brasil and Portugal. Spanish is quite similar and because of the geographic location both countries have to Spanish speaking countries Ie Spain is next to Portugal and everywhere else in South America speaks spanish so often the Portugese speakers can at least speak basic Spanish.
